It started as a language-learning side project. Customers turned it into a global commerce engine.
White Rabbit Japan began in 2003 as White Rabbit Press, created by Max Hodges to solve a personal challenge: learning Japanese. Our language products became top-sellers on Amazon.com and in bookstores across Japan and worldwide.
In 2005, customers began asking for help buying other items from Japan, so we launched White Rabbit Express (now Japan Rabbit). As pioneers of proxy buying from Japan, we built the industry playbook.
Manual quoting and purchasing doesn’t scale, so we spent the past decade building proprietary logistics and operations software. In 2016, we launched Blackship, expanding into package forwarding to make shipping from Japan simpler and more cost-effective.
Today, our systems automate purchasing, receiving, storage, and shipping—enabling a lean team to handle high volume efficiently. Last year, we purchased over a quarter million items for customers in 100+ countries.
We didn’t build this for a quick flip—it’s been profitable and self-sustaining for nearly two decades. Now it’s a turnkey platform with proven brands, mature operations, and proprietary systems—ready to scale through growth tactics and continued automation.
